The Top Of The Hour
Freddy watched the news ticker at the bottom of the screen intently. It had just gone blank, and everything was riding on what scrolled across next.
It was the weather report. Freddy cursed under his breath and pounded his fist on the armrest of the chair.
His phone rang.
“Yeah…yeah, I know…I know, I–…yeah, hey look–let me go double or nothing on the news ticker at the top of the next hour, I’m good for it…yeah…OK, double or nothing on baseball scores being first at the top of the hour…yeah, put it in…OK…OK, later.”
He hung up and immediately started second-guessing himself. Maybe it was going to be weather again at the top of the hour. Maybe it’d be politics.
But the bet was in–there was nothing he could do now except wait and hope.
And then it occurred to Freddy that maybe he had a gambling problem.
So he decided that was it–he was going to quit as soon as he made his money back on the news ticker. It hadn’t gone well for him so far that morning, but he had a good feeling about the top of the hour. It HAD to be baseball scores.
He was pretty sure, anyway. He thought.
