The Next Best Thing
Melvin sat there watching the game, wishing he was there.
When he had been there, it had been the greatest. It had definitely been the next best thing to being one of the players.
Well, the second best thing next to being one of the players. Being one of the coaches would’ve been the next best thing. You’re paid well, and you’re right there in the middle of the action but aren’t pressured to make the plays yourself.
OK–third best thing next to being one of the players. Being a team owner would be the next best thing. You make a ton of money, sit in the luxury box seats at every game, plus no pressure of being one of the ones on the field directly responsible for either making the plays or making the calls to get the win.
No…probably fourth best thing next to being one of the players. Being a sports journalist covering the games would be the next best thing. Still pretty good money, you get a view either from the field or a luxury box, no pressure to perform, no fans questioning your managerial or ownership decisions, and you get to travel to games all over the country on the company’s dime.
Yes, when he thought about it, while it certainly had its downside and hadn’t lasted very long, Melvin’s time as a replacement ref in the NFL had DEFINITELY been the fourth best thing next to being one of the players.
